OK – just to be up-front, I was raised as a Christmas/Easter Roman Catholic (RC). I am now a Fundamentalist Christian, I have *carefully* studied the Bible (not in university – amateur) and I have also read the entire RC Catechism. The theme of this answer is going to be: "I don't think some RC teachings are correct, but as far as I know *none* are contrary to the Bible"

Well – a *very* reasonable question. Probably it is some of both. On the one hand, you rely on appropriately-educated experts to interpret the Bible. Obviously a good thing! On the other hand, they are almost certainly biased, and you do not seem to have studied in order to "test" the rightness of those teachings – which may be due to fear or simple complacence.

2) Mentally,the Catholic version of atonement

Protestants have lots of different versions of this (because there are lots of different Protestant groups). I'd guess that most agree with how you have described the Catholic "version". There are "once saved always saved" Protestants – but they are a definite minority of all Protestants. Most Protestants teach the need for ongoing, sincere repentance of sins – though they do not have anything like priestly confession, teaching instead that we should pray directly to God for forgiveness of sins.

3) Did Jesus establish Peter as first Pope?

There simply is not enough information to say for sure. In my opinion, Acts 15 clearly indicates that Peter did NOT have authority over the church at that time – well into the early Gentile missionary effort – even though he clearly *had* been the leader of the small group of apostles and disciples immediately after Jesus' ascension. Historically, his position as "first bishop of Rome" is questionable, but certainly possible. In Acts 15, Peter has to "plead his case" for a ruling on a doctrine before the council of Jerusalem – that council being described again and again in the NT as if it had final authority over all the churches.

That does NOT mean that the office of Pope is "fraudulent". It could be that Peter did not actually assume that *authority* until becoming bishop of Rome (even though, supposedly, that authority was granted before the crucifixion). However, logically I cannot agree with the RC assertion that Peter was in charge of the church during the period described. Personally, I think it is not extremely important – the church needs an earthly leader, regardless of whether or not Jesus himself appointed that leader's predecessor to that office.

4) I feel the official teachings are different from what some Catholics have been taught.

True – Roman Catholicism includes many local cultural beliefs, and sometimes (frequently) those cultural beliefs get taught within the family as part of the religious belief. Only when those cultural beliefs contradict the Bible or official doctrine should you consider them problematic.

"limbo" has *never* been an official teaching of the RC Church. If you do not like it, ignore it.

Part of this is due to the fact that most RCs are not taught WHY they believe the things that they believe, and so they simply do not know how to answer a Scripturally-based criticism of their religious beliefs. RCs are taught WHAT to believe, but not (usually) WHY. Reading the Catechism (a book about as long as the entire Bible) is great for uncovering the "why". Most RCs are NOT willing to put that much effort into studying about and logically defending their religion.

Personally, I don't see this as a *church* fault. It is a shortcoming – but the objective is to make the average RC a person God will deem worthy of salvation – not to make the average RC a "defender of the faith". That takes more effort not only on the church's part but also on the individual's part!!!

I agree with your sentiment on this one – particularly the Mary thing. However, it **really is** difficult to *prove* that Mary or other saints are being worshiped in a manner reserved for God (though it seems certain to me). Also: the RC Church cannot be responsible for the improper worship practices in which individual RCs engage. All they can do is teach what is proper – they cannot force their members to DO what is proper.

I think on this matter you need to take the stance: "If I can't PROVE that someone is worshiping Mary, then I shouldn't be bothered if someone denies it. If I *can* prove it, but I can't prove that the RC Church approves such worship, then I have to resign myself to the fact that some RCs do not do as they are taught in church and instead follow local cultural customs not approved by any official of the RC Church."

Mental illness as "sin" – I have no experience with that and so have no answer to that.

2nd, 3rd… I didn't realize that flagellation still occurred. However, self-induced physical privation – asceticism – is still approved by the RC Church (and several others). As long as the practice is not done – as it once was! – in a way that significantly endangers the life of the penitent person, I see no real harm in it.

Conclusion: it seems to me that you have not presented any really good reasons for doubting the RC Church itself or its teachings. Rather, you have presented reasons for doubting some of the practices undertaken by individuals within the RC Church and for doubting some of the traditional forms of worship (voluntary physical hardship) still practiced within some cultures and permitted by the Church.

Personally, I think it might be enlightening to do the crawl thing as a sort of pilgrimage. Doing something difficult for God just because it is difficult and for God can certainly make a person feel closer to God and force them to concentrate (meditate) on their love / devotion for God. Try reading the Bible cover-to-cover – or the Catechism for that matter – and see if the very act (chore) of doing that every day does not bring you closer to God, does not focus your attention more strongly on God. The same is true of fasting – it focuses you on your religious devotion, even though strictly speaking it is not the healthiest practice (though most people would be healthier if they engaged in frequent fasting!)

I don't think *any* psychiatrist or psychologist would consider the crawling act "pathological" or "mentally" or "emotionally" unhealthy. It *might* be physically unhealthy for some people – but probably not for anyone in moderately good physical condition. What about people who pray on their knees for an hour every day? Is that "pathological" – or is it "fervent", part of their heart-felt devotion to God?
